Arts and Sciences Discovery and Dissemination Grant

This funding is provided: 

  • To allow faculty to develop new or carry out continuing research and creative activities, 
  • To develop and/or test teaching innovations, or 
  • To disseminate research and creative activities at conferences, exhibits, or other professional venues. 

Priority will be given to the development of new projects over the continuation of current projects; requests for conference travel support will be deemed a lower priority than requests for support of research or teaching activities. 

Preference will be given to quality proposals that have identified additional funding sources and/or sustainability of project activities, and that demonstrate consistency with the mission, vision, and values articulated in the College of Arts and Sciences Strategic Plan. Funds are disbursed to the faculty member’s departmental WRAP account, which can be spent in accordance with university policies for WRAP expenditures. 

Deadlines for Applications

  • October 18 for spring disbursement 
  • February 17 for summer and fall disbursement. 

Applicant Eligibility 

  • Faculty of any rank and department chairs or directors with a tenure home in the College of Arts and Sciences. 
  • Faculty are eligible for one award per 12-month period.  
  • Priority for funding will go to tenure-track faculty, non-tenured faculty, and to faculty of any rank who have not received an award in the previous 24 months. 
  • If faculty or department chairs or directors have been awarded previous Discovery and Dissemination Grants, they must have submitted a summary of their accomplishments to be eligible for any additional funding. 

Funding may be used to:

  • Provide up to $1,500 for research, creative activity, or teaching innovation.  
  • Provide up to $1,500 for domestic or international travel. 
  • Purchase of materials and supplies, Â鶹´«Ã½ stipends, participant compensation, travel necessary for the proposed activity, and/or other expenses related to carrying out the research, creative activity, or teaching innovation. 
  • Conference fees, airfare, housing, meals and other travel-related expenses for research, creative activities or teaching innovations that will be disseminated via conference presentations. 
  • Funds must be used in accordance with University procedures and in accordance with the submitted budget.

Fund disbursement:

Funding will be disbursed to a departmental fund and cost center. The amount per award and the total number of awards will depend on the number and type of proposals submitted and the availability of funds.

Guidelines for Proposal Preparation 

  • 250-word abstract describing the proposed activities 
  • A brief paragraph describing how this project aligns with goals articulated in the college’s Strategic Plan to increase the impact of discovery and dissemination of research, creative/scholarly activities and innovations in teaching.
  • A detailed budget proposal for this project that includes all expenses related to this project, even if the total budget is greater than the amount requested. Justify how funds from this award will be spent. 
  • A detailed list describing any other funding for this project. If this award will be used as seed money for the project, please describe preparation for external funding and the anticipated funding mechanisms. 
  • For travel awards only: A copy of acceptance from the conference, workshop, exhibit or performance showing the applicant as a presenting author (i.e., abstract acceptance, email notice, copy of conference volume, etc.). Travel funds will be disbursed only after the proposed work has been accepted.

Reporting

All grant recipients must submit a final report that includes the following: 

  • A summary of what was accomplished during the grant period 
  • A description of what, if any, external grants, publications, presentations or other scholarly/creative works resulted with support from the grant.  
  • Failure to submit a report will make a recipient ineligible for future awards. 

Final reports are due:

  • May 1 for the previous fall grants.
  • December 1 for the previous spring grants.
