Study abroad programs vary in length, location, number of travelers, academic focus and more. The following are general categories of study abroad programs: 

1.  are hosted and accompanied by WMU faculty representing various disciplines. Programs are generally short-term, ranging one week to ten weeks in length.  
2. WMU exchange programs are programs in which WMU Â鶹´«Ã½s register in classes at one of WMU's exchange partner institutions, and Â鶹´«Ã½s from the exchange partner come to study at WMU for one or two semesters. In exchange programs, WMU Â鶹´«Ã½s pay WMU tuition. 
3.  are programs in which WMU Â鶹´«Ã½s are registered in courses at a partner institution. 
4.  are companies or organizations that organize study abroad programs for Â鶹´«Ã½. The following is a list of "program providers" affiliated with WMU:
5. International internships are Â鶹´«Ã½ offered by organizations in which Â鶹´«Ã½s gain field expertise abroad.

Study Abroad staff members also assist Â鶹´«Ã½s who choose to participate in other University-approved programs, an international internship, or an independent study abroad.  Students must have these activities approved by WMU Study Abroad prior to departure and meet specific requirements to receive credit toward their degree program.
