WMU SLP alum chairs national conference

Jerrold Jackson, a distinguished speech-language practitioner, CEO, and advocate for culturally responsive practices, has been named the Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Co-Chair for the 2024 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention. The event, scheduled for December 5-7, 2024, in Seattle, WA, will bring together over 10,000 speech-language-hearing professionals from across the globe.

A graduate of Southern University and A&M College (B.S., Speech Pathology and Audiology, 2002) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Â鶹´«Ã½ (M.A., Speech-Language Pathology, 2004), Mr. Jackson has dedicated his career to advancing effective and equitable speech-language pathology practices. His work has encompassed a variety of roles, including assistive technologist, special education director, graduate program coordinator, and clinical education coordinator. In addition to his leadership at Roundtree Group, PLLC, where he serves as CEO/Director of Specialized Supports, Jerrold continues to teach as adjunct faculty at DePaul University, Southern University, and Â鶹´«Ã½.

Throughout his career, Jerrold has been a passionate advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), working to ensure these values are embedded in the profession’s standards and practices. As an active volunteer with ASHA, Jerrold has contributed to groundbreaking initiatives such as the development of the Assistants Certification Program, the revision of the SLP Assistants Scope of Practice, and the promotion of culturally responsive practices in continuing education. His commitment to shaping the future of the profession also led to his appointment to the Praxis National Advisory Committee for Speech-Language Pathology in 2022.

Mr. Jackson’s leadership extends beyond the national stage. He has worked closely with the National Black Association for Speech, Language, and Hearing (NBASLH), supporting initiatives like the Power to Empower Mentorship Program and serving on the NBASLH Board of Directors. His community involvement, particularly in Â鶹´«Ã½ engagement and literacy initiatives, highlights his dedication to uplifting marginalized communities.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jerrold was honored with the ASHA Dorothy Dreyer Award for Volunteerism in 2022, and he was selected for the Southern University Alumni Federation’s 40 Under Forty Award in 2021.

As Co-Chair of the 2024 ASHA Convention, Jerrold Jackson is poised to lead an event that will shape the future of the speech-language-hearing professions, bringing together thought leaders, researchers, and practitioners from diverse backgrounds.
