Why interdisciplinary?
According to the , interdisciplinary teams are associated with better health outcomes, reduced costs, and more holistic care leading to innovative solutions. Many researchers point to the need for interdisciplinary education, training and practice as the backbone for effective, quality health services in the 21st century. The Institute of Medicine's 2003 Committee on Health Professions Summit called for interdisciplinary training of health care professionals and a focus on competencies that cross disciplinary borders.
The academic programs of the School of Interdisciplinary Health Programs address those needs, focusing on core competencies needed across disciplines within health and human services. The school also expresses the college's overall commitment to provide transformative learning experiences in interprofessional roles and collaboration through coursework, service learning, clinical and fieldwork experiences, research and scholarship, and global engagement.
