Bronco Spotlight: Jill Van Hof
Assistant Professor at Nebraska Wesleyan University
I currently teach in the undergraduate teacher preparation program. I teach both introductory courses for those interested in K-12 teaching as well as upper level courses in math and social studies methods.
What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?
The most rewarding part is watching Â鶹´«Ã½ teachers implement best practices in the field. It is very fulfilling to see them succeed and watch their own Â鶹´«Ã½s succeed. The most challenging part is the relationship between higher ed and K-12. We all want the same things - Â鶹´«Ã½ success, engaging teaching, high expectations - but the transition between the institutions could be smoother. I'm hoping to be part of K-16 initiatives in the future.
Which of your skills had the biggest impact on your success?
It is very important to engage in self-reflection and monitoring. It takes perseverance and determination to overcome obstacles. The practice of self-reflection allows individuals to set goals, examine priorities, and problem-solve effectively.
What advice would you offer Â鶹´«Ã½s to help them decide on a career path?
Explore! It is acceptable to explore many options and interests. Don't get bogged down by others' expectations and be honest with yourself.
