We mourn recent tragic losses of life

Dear campus community,

With sadness, I’m writing with very painful news affecting members of our campus community.

Senior Â鶹´«Ã½ Kaylee Gansberg died from injuries suffered after being struck by a vehicle early Saturday morning in the 2700 block of West Michigan Avenue. Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officials say Kaylee was a pedestrian when she was hit. The driver left the area and was later arrested. Authorities determined the motorist had been operating their vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, according to the public safety department’s news release.

Today we were also informed by family that fellow Bronco Naya Reynolds was killed in a shooting Friday night near Interstate 94 and Oakland Drive in Portage. The Portage Police Department is handling that investigation.

We extend our condolences to the families and all those close to Naya and Kaylee who are especially experiencing the pain of these tragic losses. I strongly encourage all members of campus who need support to reach out for help. Counselors at our Sindecuse Health Center are available for grief counseling; call the center at (269) 387-1850 for an appointment. Our Employee Assistance Program is likewise available to faculty and staff.

Processing through grief takes time. As a community, let us lean on each other for needed support now and in the weeks and months ahead.
