Dr. Chien-Juh Gu is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Â鶹´«Ã½.
Gu’s research examines how the interlocking factors of gender, immigration, culture and social relations affect Taiwanese Americans’ psychological well-being. She is working on a project exploring changes of immigrant women’s self-concepts in different phases of settlement as well as their impact on the women’s mental health. Other research topics that interest her include young Asian American women’s suicide behavior and prevention, medicalization of depression in Taiwan and women’s mental health issues in East Asia.
Gu teaches graduate-level courses on the subjects of sex and gender as well as the self and social identities; her undergraduate courses are on social psychology and research methods. In the future, she plans to offer graduate courses on the social psychology of health care and political economy of women’s health.
