Machine Shop Specialist (Part-Time)

General summary
Provides technical machine shop support and advice to faculty and Â鶹´«Ã½s for instructional and research projects. Supervises the Â鶹´«Ã½ machine shop.
Major duties
- Operates machine shop equipment in construction of projects, including computerized numerical control machines.
- Designs or assists in the design and preparation of special projects. Provides technical advice and expertise to faculty and Â鶹´«Ã½s. Provides computer aided drawings as requested, to aid in design concepts.
- Constructs and repairs research and instructional lab equipment, as required.
- Provides training and instruction to faculty and Â鶹´«Ã½s to supplement classroom instruction.
- Supervises the machine shop and the Â鶹´«Ã½ shop. Ensures adherence to safety procedures and regulations. Repairs and replaces equipment as needed.
- Monitors cleanliness and proper usage by users of the shop.
- Participates in project management including purchasing materials and outsourcing to vendors as needed.
Minimum qualifications
Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.
Required education
- High school diploma or equivalent
Required experience
- Eight years' relevant experience
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with computer aided drawings and computerized numerical control programming and operation.
- Ability to use both metric and English measuring systems.
- Ability to design using computer aided drawings and computer aided manufacturing software and to construct mechanical devices and parts to high precision.
- Experience in welding, heat treatment and metallurgy.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
Physical requirements
Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
Working conditions
Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
