General summary

Assists in directing the provision of comprehensive academic advising services for a college or large unit.

Major duties

  • Provides training and development for academic advisors using best practices and core values.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of programs, advising policies, procedures, goals, publications and budgets.
  • Assists in recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Advises both enrolled and prospective undergraduate and graduate Â鶹´«Ã½s on University, college and department academic curricular requirements, including admissions and general education requirements and requirements for specific programs, majors and minors.
  • Explains graduation requirements to Â鶹´«Ã½s and provides information about course prerequisites, alternatives, and equivalents.
  • Creates, reviews and updates graduation plans with Â鶹´«Ã½s to promote personal growth, academic excellence, career development, and timely degree completion
  • Fosters a safe and inclusive environment to advance equity.
  • Assists Â鶹´«Ã½s with registration and may coordinate course scheduling.
  • Leads, coordinates and completes projects as assigned.
  • Supervises academic advisors, graduate assistants, interns, staff and Â鶹´«Ã½ employees.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years' relevant experience.
  • Five year's professional academic advising experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication stills.
  • Five year's of experience working with college Â鶹´«Ã½s.
  • Demonstrated commitment to outreach and recruitment of staff and Â鶹´«Ã½ employees from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated awareness of the diverse needs of Â鶹´«Ã½s, faculty and staff from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with culturally diverse Â鶹´«Ã½s faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promote and participate in professional development focused on the unique needs of culturally diverse Â鶹´«Ã½s faculty and staff, including culturally responsive advising.

Required other

  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including evenings and weekends.

Desired qualifications

Desired education

  • Master's degree in a related field specific to hiring college, or higher education in general from an accredited institution.

Desired experience

  • Professional academic advising experience at WMU.
  • Experience with facilitating training on topics related to academic advising, Â鶹´«Ã½ success and diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating training on unique needs of culturally diverse Â鶹´«Ã½s, faculty and staff or culturally responsive advising

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
