General summary

Supervises police officers, dispatchers, service officers, and Â鶹´«Ã½ employees on assigned shift. Ensure that all calls for services are responded to appropriately.

Major duties

  • Supervises an entire unit of police, civilian and Â鶹´«Ã½ employees to ensure the smooth operation of the shift. Assigns and reviews work of law enforcement staff.
  • Reviews incident reports, required forms, tickets, summons and related documents prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy and timely completion.
  • Provides training to officers in firearms qualification, field training, defense tactics or officer survival issues. Participates in the selection of assigned personnel and completes performance evaluations.
  • Makes recommendations on new equipment purchases and modifications to programs, policies and procedures. May prepare and implement department policies and procedures.
  • Enforces traffic laws, University ordinances, state laws and related investigations of criminal and non-criminal complaints conducted by subordinates.
  • Prepares, processes and maintains written reports and records.

Minimum qualifications

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Three years' relevant experience.

Required other

  • Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
  • Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Valid Michigan Driver’s license.

Physical requirements

Moderate work occasionally working in difficult position or with physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials from 25 to 50 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving materials greater than 50 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is performed in an environment with extremely disagreeable or hazardous working conditions with exposure to any number of elements and hazards on a continual basis.
