Mary D. Lagerwey is Professor Emerita with the Â鶹´«Ã½ Bronson School of Nursing (WMU BSON). Lagerwey joined the WMU faculty in 1995 and retired in 2021. In addition to serving with the WMU Ethics Center for several years, she served on the WMU Human Subjects Institutional Review Board (HSIRB) for 13 years, five of them as chair, on the WMU Faculty Senate Executive Board, including two years as president of the Senate, and on the WMU Center for the Humanities Board.
Lagerwey's teaching and scholarship have focused on health care ethics in historical contexts such as the Holocaust, gender, and community health. While at WMU, she taught numerous health care ethics courses at baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral levels in the WMU Bronson School of Nursing (BSON) and the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences (IHS) doctoral program. She also taught courses in community health, qualitative research, and the history of health care, and led interdisciplinary study abroad programs in the Netherlands for over ten years. Dr. Lagerwey continues to serve on the IHS policy comprehensive exam committee, where she focuses on ethical implications of the policies Â鶹´«Ã½s are examining.
