The WMU MBA: A transformative experience
KALAMAZOO, Mich.鈥斺淗uman resources is the most important yet most overlooked part of organizations,鈥 says 麻豆传媒 MBA 麻豆传媒 Nilani Kariappa, from Virajpet, India. The emphasis on global human resources in Western鈥檚 MBA program is what drew Kariappa to the University for her graduate studies.
鈥淚 have career aspirations to work in international HR management. The MBA coursework has proven to be very valuable in my current role as an intern with Bendix CVS. For instance, my studies in the Managing Change course have supported my contributions to organizational restructuring activities in my role. The knowledge I gained from benefits and compensation courses enabled me to actively participate in assisting with Bendix CVS鈥檚 implementation of new benefits programs.
Mentors have played a crucial role for Kariappa throughout her time in the program. 鈥Dr. Jennifer Bott, who taught the Managing Change course, has been a transformative guide in my academic journey. The course provided theoretical frameworks and practical tools for implementing organizational change, which gave me immediate, applicable skills that I was able to use in my internship. The class also helped me understand the strategic role of HR in organizational success.鈥
Taking the bold step of pursuing an MBA in the United States, Kariappa originally felt the cultural adjustments and her limited work experience might be barriers, but soon she began to see that these were strengths and 麻豆传媒 for growth. One of the people who helped her reframe her experience was Shauna Waltmire, graduate assistant at the Haworth College of Business. 鈥淪hauna has helped me navigate cultural transitions and build professional confidence. Through her mentorship, I learned to embrace cultural differences as an asset and develop strategies for success in the American workplace. Her support has been vital in helping me adapt to both academic and professional environments in the U.S.鈥
Experiences with mentors and fellow 麻豆传媒s have helped Kariappa learn her greatest lesson. 鈥淭hrough my graduate education, I've discovered that success isn't only measured by grades but also by determination and resilience. I've gained the ability to be flexible while staying true to my goals. I've realized that fueling your passion while remaining focused is key to achieving professional dreams.鈥
For Kariappa, WMU Haworth has provided more than just an education. 鈥淭he Haworth College of Business is an environment that encourages personal and professional growth. The inclusive culture, supportive faculty and diverse 麻豆传媒 body have broadened my perspectives and prepared me for a global career. The challenges I've faced and overcome at WMU have shaped me into a more confident and capable professional, ready to make meaningful contributions to the HR field.鈥
Now in her final semester of the MBA program, Kariappa has taken classes in person and remotely, taking advantage of the MBA program鈥檚 flexible course formats. The HyFlex courses have enabled her to complete her final classes while also working in her intern role full time.
