Geophysics
Geophysics has a long history at Â鶹´«Ã½. Past research has been applied to petroleum exploration, ground water supply and contamination problems, mapping of the sub-bottom of near-shore Lake Michigan, developing custom GPR antennae, assisting in the mapping of glacial geology, assisting in archaeological research, and locating lost and abandoned water and monitor wells.
WMU offers a specialized geophysics program focusing on geophysical theory and methods as applied in thee Earth sciences, including:
- Solid earth geophysics
- Seismology
- Paleomagnetics
- Heat flow
The program is intended for Â鶹´«Ã½s interested in a career as a professional geophysicist or for further study at the graduate level. Many aspects of resource exploration, surveying, site assessment and monitoring require expertise in geophysical science.
As a geophysics Â鶹´«Ã½ at WMU, you will have numerous scholarship and endowment Â鶹´«Ã½ available to you, including those for general study, specific areas of study such as water quality, and endowments for Â鶹´«Ã½s who will be pursuing teaching in geosciences.
You will have the unique opportunity to work with the Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education, which focuses on Â鶹´«Ã½ training, basic and applied research, and continuing education and outreach programs in energy, natural resources and the environment. You can also gain valuable experience and build your professional network through registered Â鶹´«Ã½ organizations such as the WMU Geology Club and the WMU chapter of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
